| Acetonitrile Supply |
Supply of Acetonitrile is currently restricted. Acetonitrile is produced at relatively low volumes as a by-product from the manufacture of the monomer acrylonitrile, which is used to make its polymer, polyacrylonitrile; a fundamental raw material in the manufacture of plastics. Global demand for acrylonitrile is significantly reduced due to production cutbacks in response to reduced consumer demand for plastics, leading to a global acetonitrile raw material shortage.
Our suppliers are working to alleviate this problem. Manufacturers are looking to purify acetonitrile independantly of acrylonitrile production, however the shortage is likely to continue into 2009. |
